Let's go back to 1966. The Lompoc
High School Marching Band had been rehearsing like crazy to enter
the Santa Barbara Christmas Parade. It was a rainy December so
most rehearsals were held indoors, marking time and playing "The New
Colonial March" over and over and over again, until it was
completely memorized and perfect. As the weather cleared, the band
rushed outdoors to practice the music while marching. "Guide
right and watch your diagonals," band teacher John Porter
shouted. The band was ready for the trip to Santa
Barbara. The parade featured marching units, floats and
cracker jack bands from other high schools in the county. The
band marched -- the band played. They were good. Afterwards,
the awards ceremony was held. The awards were open to all
entries. A float, band, or any other unit could win any of the
first, second, third, or even sweepstakes awards. Band members
huddled together in the bleachers waiting for the awards
announcements. Third place........Second
place........First place.....The Lompoc High School Band was not
mentioned. Despondent band members suddenly lost interest in
listening when over the loudspeaker came, "And the sweepstakes
trophy goes to ........ The Lompoc High School Marching Band!"
Everyone stood up, hugged each other and screamed in
disbelief. They had won the overall Sweepstakes trophy,
beating out every other entry in the parade, including those smug
bands from Santa Barbara area High Schools!
